Laurel Masse, founding member of Manhattan Transfer, will follow her acclaimed series of New Year's shows at the Metropolitan Room with a return to the club for three shows in April. Joining her will be pianist and musical collaborator Tex Arnold, and Jon Burr on bass.
Tuesday night at the Metropolitan Room is becoming a popular destination for jazz lovers. Mass's 9:30 PM show follows venerable singer Annie Ross' regular 7:00 PM set. Says Masse, “Annie Ross has been a great influence throughout my career; I consider it a tremendous honor to be sharing Tuesday evenings with her.”
Songs in Masse's set are drawn from a variety of sources, reflecting her eclectic musical tastes and her unique ability to make any song her own. Joni Mitchell, Dave Brubeck, Carol Hall, and Lerner and Lowe are just a few of the composers whose work is included in the evening. While some of the material can be found on her previously released CDs Alone Together, Easy Living, Again, and Feather and Bone, many of the tunes will offer a sneak peek at her fifth solo CD currently in the works.
She has a marvelous sense of style, a purity of tone....dazzling. John S. Wilson, The New York Times
How can you not fall in love with someone who brings such life and joy to every note that passes through her lips - who transforms even the most familiar songs into stunning new dramatic entities? Simply one of the most musically-compelling programs ever.... Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times
Laurel Masse is an unusually graceful, funny, sensuous, lyrical singer who can swing and phrase like a hot cornet but is also a gently insinuating ballad singer. Nat Hentoff, The Progressive
Miss Masse has an impressive set of pipes - power plus flexibility - and a true jazz feeling. --Ira Gitler, Jazz Times
